Costa Rican currency is the colon. American dollars and major credit cards are acceptable almost everywhere, except in small business establishments or hotels and restaurants in remote locations.
Spanish is the official language. English is widely spoken throughout the country.

Heath care in Costa Rica is excellent and sanitary standards are high. Top quality hospitals are found throughout San Jose; and some of the other areas with large populations. Health care services throughout Costa Rica are faster, more efficient, and better priced than most North American countries (including Canada and the U.S.)
Banks are typically open from 9 to 5 with many branches in San Jose open on Saturdays and Sundays. Some have extended evening hours, they do not close for lunch.
Government offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Commercial offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Stores and other businesses are open from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Direct-dial telephone service, facsimile, telex, radio and cable television are all available.
A 10% tip in a restaurant is appropriate but most restaurants will add it to your bill, so read your bill before paying a tip. Leaving an addition 5-10% is recommended when receiving superior service.
The water is safe to drink in all areas of the country. Nevertheless, we suggest you buy bottled water for drinking.
